Katniss
Everdeen the Girl on Fire
VS
Bella Swan
the Vampire who Sparkles
I’m sure most of you have read, seen, or heard of the Hunger Games
and Twilight. If you haven’t then you’ve
probably been living under a rock. Katniss Everdeen and Bella Swan are two of
the most well known heroines in fiction today, and in terms of popularity, they're pretty even.
But are Bella and Katniss equally epic?
Let’s see…
Katniss fights to stay alive in
gladiator-style battle to the death. She faced the death of her father and kept
her entire family from starving to death… at age 12.
By 16 she could hunt, climb, and defend herself against
crazed, bloodthirsty children from Hell. At 16 I was definitely still trying to
figure out how to navigate my high school hallway without getting trampled.
Katniss survived being marked for
death by the government, being lit on fire, getting stung by crazy hybrid bees,
and being chased by a pack of rabid, mutant dogs. Not only did she survive, but
she kept Peeta alive the entire time. Which let’s face it, is a full time job
on its own. The guy is basically a damsel in distress through the entire Hunger
Games. Then she outsmarts the entire system in order to save both Peeta and
herself, beating the Capitol at its own game. She becomes a symbol of freedom
and revolution for the people without a voice. She ends up inspiring thousands
of oppressed people to rebel against their corrupt government. Not bad for an
18 year old.

Bella
moves
to Forks, Washington and falls in love with a massively attractive vampire, Edward Cullen. She spends the first third of Twilight
figuring out three basic facts… that Edward is a vampire, that he wants to eat
her, and that she is completely in love with him.
Say whatever you want about not
being able to choose who you fall in love with, but I'm pretty sure
that natural selection had it in for this girl. She is clumsy to the point that
she can barely function and she’s physically the weakest character in the story. Also ***SPOILERS*** she spends most of her
time waiting for Edward to come and save her from various life threatening
situations.
To be fair, she is a caring and
generally kind person and she really does love Edward. But that’s really all I
can say about her as an individual.
So who do you think is the better heroine?
